Halifax Organics Facility

Building for Sustainability: The EasCan & Maple Reinders Partnership

Client: Maple Reinders Constructors Ltd.
Owner: Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM)

Challenge

Maple Reinders Constructors Ltd., a leading general contractor, was tasked with delivering the Halifax Organics Facility, a state-of-the-art 190,000 square foot organics waste processing center for HRM. The facility needed to replace aging infrastructure and increase processing capacity to 60,000 tonnes annually

Key challenges included:

  • Creating a complex industrial structure resistant to corrosion and high moisture environments, essential for the enclosed composting process.

  • Ensuring the building required minimal maintenance while maintaining durability and functionality over the long term.

  • Delivering a structure that would support advanced noise and odour control systems, all while keeping construction timelines on track.

Solutions Provided by EasCan

EasCan Building Systems was selected to design, fabricate, and construct the pre-engineered galvanized steel framing, insulated metal wall panels, and standing seam roofing. Their expertise in industrial construction and ability to meet stringent quality standards made them the ideal partner for this high-profile project.

Key Deliverables:

  1. Custom Design & Engineering: EasCan developed a galvanized steel structure tailored to withstand the harsh conditions of the facility’s interior, ensuring longevity and reduced maintenance.

  2. Corrosion-Resistant Materials: The use of high-quality galvanized steel and insulated panels provided a solution capable of resisting corrosion in the facility’s moisture-rich environment.

  3. Quality Control & Assurance: EasCan implemented rigorous Quality Control (QC) and Quality Assurance (QA) programs, both in their fabrication shop and on-site, ensuring every component met or exceeded industry standards.

  4. Seamless Collaboration: EasCan coordinated closely with Maple Reinders throughout the project to integrate their steel and cladding systems into the overall facility design, keeping the project on schedule and on budget.

Results

The Halifax Organics Facility stands as a testament to EasCan’s commitment to quality and innovation.

Increased Capacity: The facility now processes 60,000 tonnes of organic waste annually, providing HRM with the ability to meet growing demand.

Improved Environmental Controls: Advanced noise and odour management systems ensure minimal disruption to nearby communities.

Durability: EasCan’s corrosion-resistant materials and precision engineering guarantee a structure built to last, reducing long-term maintenance costs.

Sustainability: The enclosed design minimizes environmental impact, aligning with HRM’s sustainability goals.
